June 15th is recognized annually as World Elder Abuse Awareness Day. Please join the Center for Elder Justice and Education (CFEJAE) and Elville and Associates to show your support for victims and survivors. Today’s presentation will focus on Financial Exploitation of Older Persons. It is estimated that older adults are scammed out of 36 billion dollars per year in financial exploitation. Such exploitation occurs when older adults are deprived of their property by improper means and commonly includes theft, fraud or deceptive behavior.

Often the perpetrator of this behavior is a family member, caregiver, or someone who has a relationship of trust with the older adult. Increasingly, older adults are also targeted for exploitation by strangers using various types of scams and frauds. Case studies and interviews with victims are included in the presentation.

There are two speakers for the event.  Your first and primary presenter is Andre Lingham. Andre is the founder and president of the Center for Elder Justice and Education, Inc. Prior to becoming president of CFEJAE, Andre served as the Senior Citizen Liaison for the Howard County Police Department. Andre retired from the Howard County Police Department, in November 2019, to focus on elder abuse awareness and education.

Your second presenter is Stephen Elville, Managing Principal and Lead Attorney of Elville and Associates, an estate planning, elder law, and special needs planning law firm based in Columbia.  Steve and his firm maintain a strong focus on education for its clients and the communities it serves, and he is widely regarded as one of the finest attorneys in the mid-Atlantic region.  Steve will be addressing powers of attorney from a legal perspective during the presentation.
